Working On It

This morning I arose before the sun (guess he was eating his Jimmy Dean sausage biscuits). I do that quite often. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed. I usually wake up around the same time...before the sun comes up. I stuck my head between the ear buds of my Ipod (and worship music) and had some real communion. Man, it was good! To some people it sounds silly to just hang out with God. What did I ask God? Nothing. What did I ask Him for? Nothing. Who did I pray for? Love me now...no one. I just hung with God. How unreligious is that?

It's like my own marriage. I've been in a marital relationship with Connie almost 36 years. The most incredible blessing of our relationship is not what I can get out of it (even though the rewards are infinite). But it's the fact that I just love being with Connie and she with me. We just love to hang out. I cannot stand to be away from her. She is not my "Old lady", she's my bride of almost 36 years. And you know what, it just gets better and better! But isn't that the way it should be with God? Shouldn't we be in relationship with Him through Jesus? Shouldn't our relationship be steadily growing? Shouldn't it be getting better and better? The answer is yes.

Your relationship with Jesus, like marriage, takes effort on your part. In marriage relationships a major cause of divorce is lack of communication. Couples really don't know each other. I've heard couples say "We just grew further and further apart". The truth is you should be growing closer and closer together. That takes effort and work from both parties. The only difference with God is that He's always there. He already knows you to the bone. He cannot love you any more than He does right now! Your part and my part is to work at the relationship. Think about this. You don't study the Bible simply because you are a believer. You study the Word also because it is the "Word of God". It contains His thoughts, His ways, and His will for every life situation! You don't pray just because you are a follower of Christ. You pray because He shares His heart with those who pray. You don't just commune with Him in praise and worship because you are a Christian. But you commune (hang out) with Him because He is the most incredible being in the universe period! (By the way He created the universe.)

I want to encourage you to set time apart to be with God. He says He will never leave or forsake you. So He's doing His part. I agree, it is so hard in today's culture to find extra time. So then, make it top priority. When it is truly a priority, you will see the significance in hanging out with Him. I will change your life! What about it?
